I’m a Middle School Tech Ed teacher and am actively involved in using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. Teaching and passion are of primary import, but it is collaborative technology that will take us places we’ve yet to imagine!
My main interests lie in increasing the digital literacy of my students – using blogs, wikis, podcasting, a Moodle CMS installation, and tools like Slideshare, Jing, Skype, Flickr, and Picnik – and doing everything I can to service our school’s increasingly large ESOL / EFL population.
I have a Master’s degree in Art History with a focus on 19th and 20th-century art, architecture, and media culture, and I use this training to enhance my technology lessons whenever possible.
Aside from my work at Boone, I teach Introductory and Contemporary Humanities courses at Polk Community College in Lakeland, Florida.
Technology Student Association
One of the best parts about my Technology Education position at Boone Middle School is my role as Advisor for our Technology Student Association (TSA) chapter. TSA is a Department of Education encouraged activity that can enhance a technology education program, build confidence, provide extra-curricular and leadership skills for students, and add an exciting dimension to the teaching profession. We encourage our current chapters to re-affiliate, and invite former chapters and new affiliates to join in on the exciting opportunities provided by a TSA membership.
TSA members learn problem-solving, decision-making, critical thinking and leadership skills as they relate to design, communications, power, energy, transportation, engineering, manufacturing, construction and biotechnology. Working collaboratively, our students strive to attain the educational and leadership experience required to face the challenges posed by a rapidly and ever-changing technological world.
World View:
I was born in Belgium, but I’ve lived in the States for most of my life. I have traveled extensively throughout the US, Europe, Tunisia, and Mexico gathering experiences and global impressions that have had a clear impact on my teaching practices.
As an educator, my job is to create as many interfaces between my students and the global community as I can. I believe in the power of collaborative technology and its ability to excite and engage todays’ learners across all boundaries – social, political, economic, and racial. Have an idea? Go for it! If it doesn’t pan out, then take from it what you can and move on to the next one. Each generation builds upon and moves ahead of what the last one left behind. What will we leave today’s learner? Fortunately, I’m young enough to have absolutely no clear cut idea, but I do see a blinding light ahead — one that will hopefully shine for my students and their families and loved ones for generations to come.
